Growth lessons from the gym

Many years ago, I was a young man who wanted to get fit and strong. I started going to the gym but quickly ran into a problem – I didn’t know what I was doing.

My gym routine was unstructured, often just copying what others were doing, and my visits were sporadic – I’d go when I "had time."

The result was predictable: no real progress. Just frustration.

Things started to change when I moved to a new city and started training with my sister’s partner, a former state champion athlete with an encyclopaedic knowledge of health and fitness.

He taught me the “foundations”, taking care to explain not just the how, but why some exercises were essential and others unnecessary.

With his help, I was able build a system that made it easy to track my progress, and stick to a consistent schedule. This systematic approach resonated with me, and became a routine I've now followed for almost 20 years.

Fitness and your firm

I could have continued to struggle alone, likely quitting, convinced "it's not for me." But with proper guidance and a systematic approach, I “grew” – in fitness, strength and confidence.

The same principles apply to your firm.

Trying to figure out marketing on your own usually leads to frustration, along with valuable time and money wasted. If you want to achieve your goals, you’ll need guidance to build a system for growth.

Work with someone who understands your business, your unique challenges and goals, and diagnoses before they prescribe.

Build strong foundations – understand the how and why behind your firm’s marketing, and use analytics to measure your efforts, just as people track their lifts to ensure progress.

Make adjustments and optimisations as needed – an effective system is flexible, able to adapt to changes without losing sight of the ultimate goal.

The real power of a growth system is in its lasting impact. With the right approach, you can continue to follow and reap the rewards for years to come.

Sure, it may not be as flashy as "5-minute abs" – but it will actually work.
